KEMRI Wellcome Trust Research Program Massive Jobs (23 Positions)

The Centre of Geographical Medicine Research Coast (CGMRC) is one of the ten centres of the Kenya Medical Research Institute (KEMRI). It is home to the KEMRI-Wellcome Trust Research Programme and is well known internationally for its work tackling malaria and other infectious diseases, particularly bacterial and viral childhood infections. The Programme was formally established in 1989 as a partnership between KEMRI, Oxford University and the Wellcome Trust. It conducts basic, epidemiological and clinical research in parallel, with results feeding directly into local and international health policy, and aims to expand the country’s capacity to conduct multidisciplinary research that is strong, sustainable and internationally competitive. Strong community links are at the heart of the Programme, with an emphasis on capacity building and training to build scientific leadership.

Research internships are a mechanism for giving high calibre young university graduates a structured experience of research at an early stage in their career. They provide an opportunity to gain experience by assisting senior scientific staff and participating in on-going research activities. This gives interns a chance to see whether they wish to embark on a research career. The internships are strictly limited to 6 months duration and are non-renewable. A monthly stipend is provided. Generally, a first or upper second Bachelors degree within the last year from an East African University and in addition a minimum average score of B+ or equivalent at secondary school exit exams is required. Depending on the projects available, the degrees can be in a biomedical science (e.g. zoology, biochemistry) or a health science (pharmacy, medicine, dentistry, nursing) or mathematics, statistics, epidemiology, demography, geoscience, social science, economics or anthropology.

The fieldworker s in this position will undertake the daily activities of screening, recruiting, anthropometry, data entry, tracing and procedural paperwork for the study to ensure timely data collection and adherence to study specific procedures for a clinical trial involving children with severe malnutrition (CTX Trial). Some fieldworkers will be principally hospital based while others will work mainly in the community.

REPORTING LINES:

The Malaria Public Health & Epidemiology Group (MPHEG)initiated an international initiative called the Malaria Atlas Project (MAP) in 2005. The aim of MAP is to assemble, curate and geo-locate malariometric data and process these data using model-based geostatistical methods to provide a range of risk maps for international agencies, national governments and research purposes.
By 2014 MAP intends to produce a definitive set of historical and contemporary maps of malaria risk across Africa. This research programme will require a large data gathering and GIS effort to meet its ambitions. The KEMRI – Wellcome Trust Programme is therefore seeking to appoint a new position to provide technical support in preparation for the final MAP-Africa products over the next two years.
